A House With Stories
Every home has a story but there is something about old houses that I love — the many stories that have happened there. One house I recently visited was old, scandalous, full of history, and now part of modern life as a rental to an expat family today.
Hohenzollern Castle
Writing in his journal in 1844, King Frederick Willam IV of Prussia remembered traveling through southern Germany 25 years earlier as he wanted to know more about his ancestry in the area. He hiked to the top of the largest hill in the area where the ruins of a castle remained and recorded this:
“The memory of the year [18]19, to me is exceedingly lovely, and like a beautiful dream, especially the sunset we saw from one of the castle bastions. [...] Now is a desire, a dream of [my] youth, to see Hohenzollern Castle again made habitable.”
This was the start of one of the most beautiful and most visited castles in Germany.
Triberg: Waterfalls & Cuckoo Clocks
Anytime we go anywhere I usually am sharing interesting facts and did bits about the place we are going to so that my kids will feel excited and have more of an attachment to the things we are seeing. Google is my friend for this! So here are some fast facts about the Black Forest and Triberg and the sites we explored last weekend.
Ludwigsburg Palace Pumpkin Fest
Do they do pumpkin things here in Europe? Turns out pumpkins are big here. In size and varieties and availability. But no pumpkin spice…at least not the way Americans do it. My taste buds are used to rich cinnamony flavors with nutmeg and cloves. The spice here leans towards spicy (think cayenne), and it’s good!
