Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market

A few months ago a friend sent me a link with all the Christmas markets throughout Germany with personal reviews and notes. I poured over it all, adding links and dates to my calendar for the most loved markets. The Ravenna Gorge Market was one at the top of the list.

This market is incredibly popular for it’s amazing location. It’s not easy to get to but is set at the bottom of a tall arched bridge that is lit up and surrounded by a very small Christmas market with great lights, music and open fires that make it very much worth it the drive. You have to buy tickets for this market in October because it does completely sell out but the tickets were inexpensive and easy to book online. We parked at Himmelreich train station for free and took a shuttle bus (included in our ticket) into the gorge area. Another option is to park at the top of the gorge and walk 3km down into the market. The views from up above are amazing!

My kids were honestly not jazzed about hitting up Christmas markets but this one has completely changed their mind and they are excited now for all the others we have on the calendar this season. We grabbed the spiced cider in the market mugs right away and wandered through all the chalets to see what was offered. I also let everyone pick whatever they wanted to eat - everything was so inexpensive at this market! It made it really fun for the kids and we all got to try a lot of different things.

Reibkuchen with apfelmus, roasted mushrooms with garlic cream sauce, rosemary beef tölles, and of course, roasted chestnuts. We also saw fire roasted salmon, crepes, and raclette that all looked delicious.

We stayed about two hours and came home with two different market mugs, some fuzzy slippers my daughter fell in love with, and a gift for a friend. I wish I would have bought some outdoor lanterns I saw that were so beautiful, but all the work of recently moving to Germany still has me in minimalist mode.

I am so glad we went, and so glad it wasn’t freezing yet because that dark drive home through the mountain tops was 😳. We are ready and excited for the next market on the list!
