Girls’ Ski Trip

Me and my girls, Em and Nols, just had a girls’ trip to ski the Alps and we had the best time. Lots of black and blue bruises and things we will never forget.

The bruises? Well, it was Emme and Nola’s first time skiing and they both did amazingly well, picking it up so quickly. We traveled to the German Alps right on the border of Austria in Garmisch and stayed at the Edelweiss resort. I booked a lesson for both girls and then jumped on the gondola myself for a day of skiing. It has been such a long time! I grew up skiing and always wished I could give my kids those same memories, but I am happy we get to do it now and here in Germany!

I loved the scenic murals painted on so many of the houses.

How was it skiing in the Alps? So beautiful and surreal, but it was also the worst snow and conditions I’ve ever skied in. Just my luck. It was honestly just a sheet of thick ice in so many places. The fog was insanely thick for most of the day, too, which made navigating the runs really difficult. I couldn’t see any other skiers until we were just 15 feet away from each other which made for some really close calls. I had a hard fall every time I came down the mountain as I’d hit a massive patch of ice right when I’d need to stop quickly to avoid another skier. It gave me some of the blackest bruises on my legs I’ve ever had in my life! The mountain was extensive with lots of runs to explore. I stuck with the intermediate runs this time just because it was a new mountain to me and I wasn’t entirely sure what each run would bring. But even with the i’ve and fog it was all so much fun to be there and enjoy skiing again.

I loved sharing lifts and gondolas with people from all over. There were some really nice young guys from Spain, a group of little kids from Korea, moms from France, and lots of people from Germany and Austria. I didn’t meet or hear any English speakers the whole day!

I stopped in at the girls’ lesson spot at the end of the day to see their progress and they were both so excited to come back to ski again and really get going on the mountain. I called the resort right away to make another reservation for us with the boys next time, but of course the resort is all booked out for the season. I’ll have to act faster for next year. I’m just glad that the girls loved it and caught on so easily.

After a quick dinner at an amazing Italian restaurant, Nola and I headed back to the mountain for some night-time sledding and had the best time. That girl just goes and goes and goes and is so much fun. As soon as her head hit the pillow that night, she was out. It was such a good day.
