Black Forest Ziplining
I’m afraid of heights. Really afraid of heights. I can’t help but imagine accidentally slipping over an edge or losing my balance and falling to a tragic end. When I am on my own, it’s not so bad. I regulate my breathing and talk myself through it. And when my kids are with me? Nope, can’t do it. It’s too much. My heart races and I start to sweat and hyperventilate.
So of course when the opportunity came to go zip lining in the Black Forest mountains a few weeks ago, and I jumped on it before realizing it would mean great heights, I almost backed out. This was going to be a day out with just Matt so I let the booking stand and tried not to think about it.
It was about an hour and half drive into the most beautiful scenery, through storybook villages and perfect pined forests. We reached the base trail and had our quick ziplining education and starting hiking up and up and up. The first two platforms were “practice” lines. Just to get the hang of it before reaching the 600 meter lines where we would zip across canyons for a full 60 seconds, really, really high off the ground.
I was super chill, as best I could be anyway, until that first jump off! My knees felt like static, I clenched my jaw and my back was stiff, but I survived. With each progressively longer, faster line, I tried my best to ease my nerves and fully enjoy the experience and the beauty.
I’m super proud of myself for doing it and won’t forget these views. I think my older kids would have loved this too. I was such a fun day out. Something you find on almost every trail here in Germany is a biergarten — sometimes it’s a little hut with some coolers filled with local beers, maybe some ice creams or sodas. Sometimes there are umbrellas and tables set up, too. It definitely makes a hike more fun! You just need to have cash on hand since it’s usually honor system. I love it!
I give zip lining in the Black Forest in Germany 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
